Is it my imagination or.........

OK, Barb needs a reality check. Yesterday, after watching the 7 Parelli Games DVD (again), I go out and play with Ed and Dolly. This happened with both horses, but particularly Ed. I was practicing moving their hindquarters with a glance and small move in the right or left direction. At one point I was kinda crouched and faking Ed out whether I was going to go left or right. He had his head down low, looking me right in the eye, and would move his head to the right or left when I would fake back and forth. The instant I actually made a move, he would whirl around and face up with me. The look in his eye was pure delight and mischieviousness (spell that right?). Now, am I imagining things, or was he really enjoying this game? Dolly did the same thing, but tired of it more quickly, like let's do something else now, I'm bored.

It was also my opinion that after that, Ed played the other games more willingly. He hates to back up, but he was much more responsive to the jiggling of the lead. He also circled without needing much prompting to maintain his gait.

Opinions please.
Horrid TV Trainer

His name is Rick Wheat and he was on Dish Network channel 9411, right after one of my favorite trainers, Richard Winters.

Rick got a spooky, unbroke, 3 year old that kicked, bit, pawed and reared. He did almost no ground work but roped the horse around the front feet and proceeded to have his partner saddle and cinch up the horse, all the time just barely touching him because, after all, the horse bit, pawed and kicked.

The partner then climbed aboard this poor baby for his first ride, while Rick was holding on to the rope that ran around his front legs, over his body and attached to one front hoof. Rick did this so he could take him down by tripping him because a horse's worst fear is falling....according to Rick.

I can't believe this guy got on TV and actually has some sponsors. I was horrified. If y'all get the chance to watch him, check it out and let me know what you think.
Brrrr.....

Okay, where is the South Texas winter that I've grown accustomed to? The cold wind is blowing so hard here that I need to tie the weiner dogs down.

I'm worried about my plants. I have a few covered with Christmas lights, then a sheet, and then a layer of plastic. I'm sure the neighbors wondered what the heck I was doing putting up lights after Christmas but it does give the yard an interesting glow in the dark.
Question for you Tim....

I know you know dogs about as well as you do horses....

Sadie, my dobie, is my 1st dog. She seriously has to be about the best friend I have ever had. I can't even begin to explain to you what she has meant to me over the years. But, she's getting old. She will be 10 this spring. For a doberman that's old. My vet says she is in good health for her age, but she's nearing the end of the line. If I get another year or 2 with her I will be lucky. I have really noticed changes in her over the past year. She's slowing down, she sleeps more, she has a hard time getting up, and she has a tough time going up and down our stairs. She's gotten a lot more affectionate too. It use to be that we when I sat on the couch she had to be on the other end and didn't like to be touched. Now she wants to cuddle up right next to me and lay her head in my lap. She use to be my shadow and at my feet all the time, now she stays semi close and I see her keeping an eye on me, but she won't follow me until I leave the room. The realization that she won't be around much longer is sinking in and is slowly breaking my heart. My question to you is......How the hell do you deal with, and get through this?...
BIG thank you (AGAIN)!

Tim,
Just wanted to thank you once again for the time you spent with Joy and I last Friday working with our horses. As always I came away with a lot of good information and knowing what I was doing wrong to confuse my horse. And it's always nice to see you and chat. Ed and I have a competitive trail ride this weekend in Bandera, so we will probably get a chance to try out our "new" sidepass. Think warm thoughts for us, it's supposed to be 19 degrees tomorrow night and I'm sleeping on a cot in a horse trailer stall - bbbbbrrrrrrr.

I think I mentioned this before, but I have the opportunity to buy Karen's horse, "Dolly," who I have wanted from the first time I rode her. She is more my speed, while Ed is a driven competitor. Therefore, I am reluctantly going to offer Ed for sale to someone interested in Endurance competitions or the Competitive Trail Rides. You know Ed better than anyone, and I wondered if I could refer any potential buyers to you if they want to talk to you. Unfortunately, at my age I don't have the energy for two horses or I would keep Ed forever.

Thanks again for a very enjoyable day.
Barb

just checking in

Hey,
I have been reading the posts off and on, but thought I would check in to let you know I'm still out here! I have been super busy work wise, but also "play" wise. I have learned so much, and Magic is doing so well. She really "listens" to my seat - so I have had to really work on my riding skills - but I am just loving it. I would have to say that the biggest problem I am having is learning to tell whether I'm cueing her to do something that I didn't mean, or she is not listening - but I am thinking that more time in the saddle will fix that. I even rode her some today in this cold - I was hesitant because Magic was really feeling good with the wind blowing, etc. - but I did and am so glad that I worked through that fear. She is really a sweetheart -

anyway - I will try to get someone to take a picture of us so I can post it -

Jeanne

Practice Playday Info

We will have a practice playday this Saturday, Nov. 7th, beginning at 10 am at the Fish Hatchery Arena. We will mess around with setting up the events, trying out the sound system, and making sure the paperwork is in order, all to ensure a smooth show when we finally do the playday for real. This will be informal, relaxed, and just for fun.

It might be a good idea for everyone to bring a cooler with drinks and maybe some snacks to share. I'll go by Pruskis and get some sausage and also bring cheese and crackers. Anybody else want to bring something?
just checking in - and another question

Hey Tim,
I have been gone from the boards for awhile - too much medical, work & then just not enough playing with Magic! Actually, this last month I have been doing double time with Magic - riding her about 4 days out of the week. She is doing so well - and I am learning so much and having a blast. Because of a variety of things, I have left her at Troys, but it has worked out well as Troy stops and talks me through things and works with me everytime I go out to ride, and I get to sit in and listen to his other lessons - and watch him work his horses - so it has really been good for me. Anyway, Magic has one issue that we just can't figure out how to fix. When she is put out to pasture, and you walk away - or if she is in her pasture and someone walks out to the barn - she comes up to the gate and paws on it. It has become a problem since the area she has been in has concrete at the base of the gate - so she is pawing on concrete and she bruised her foot, and it abscessed. She healed fine - but I worry about it happening again and again. How do I address this issue? She used to paw when I had her at home - to the point where I had to replace a gate that she damaged so badly. I thought when she was home it was because she was alone - but she is with other horses. Troy said it really looks almost like separation anxiety to him - like you would see from a orphan. (I can email her history - she wasn't actually orphaned, but certainly didn't have a good mothering experience as a baby - kind of ugly). Even though I replaced my gates with wire-filled gates so she can't get her leg through and break it, I know when I bring her home I worry about what she will do. Anyway - any advice on what I can do?
